A few final words for folks brave enough to attend "Muff in the Ruff". Rest easy, Pope sez that POP's if not yet delivered are indeed on the way. In the past few days we've heard or gotten word from the Ricks (Banjo and Mando), King Jomo, Mr. Ocono Lodge, Dan and Jane, P. Pot and 2/3 Clams, Mz Nanceee, Dandy Gee (and the Beer Pong Boys), Senor Blanco & Smithy, the Derwoody Clan, Bean Man Ben, Bishop Joey... and the list goes on and on. Also, many regrets from those who are disposed elsewhere or perhaps are just BIG BABIES! In any case, hopefully some grass was cut and if not maybe there will be a weed whacker or 2 available to spruce up your camp site. Ed sez please beware of overhead branches when you pitch your tent. Some rather large ones came down this past year. So car pool if you can and be sure to pack your woolies. You know the drill, have a safe trip and see you "up" there.

Newly Discovered Volcano Threatens To Blow Away Nuthin Muffin

It has been reported in a recent USGS press release that a long forgotten and assumed dormant volcano in the region north east of Browns Valley CA is showing signs of new activity and unrest. Locals have reporting seeing signs of increasing pressure with small eruptions of smoke and ash emitted into the atmosphere. Some blame this activity on a failure to maintain farm equipment or large falling tree branches. The Muffin committee wants to assure all potential XXXVI Muffineers that this occurrence will "in no way" impede our ability to engage in Muffin type activity this year. As a precaution, Muffineers are requested to be prepared for raining brimstone and avoid generating loud noises and other acts of hammerheadedness in the vicinity of the cinder cone/trailer.

Well, clearly we have had to eliminate the many "give-aways" that made Muffin so popular (and poor) in the past. Muffin Committee Announces Austerity Program For 2011

Cough! Cough! .... Wow, its really dusty in here! Cough! Somebody OPEN A WINDOW! Hope this thing doesn't blow up when I fire it up!

Jeez ... Contrary to what that last post sez, that last Muffin must have really turned some folks off. It's like a ghost town around here. Maybe all those looser geezer hippies finally packed it in. Too bad, just when it looked like there might be a crop of young-un's around to carry the torch. Oh, well!

So I'm guessing your eye balls ended up here cause you are thinking that it sure would be great to enjoy a good old fashioned pull out all the stops mind blowing Muffin for a change. Well, the powers that be sent me out here to let you know what's going on (or not!). The story here is that the Muffin committee, in the spirit of these tough times, is announcing serious cut-backs to the extravagant and wasteful ways of Muffins past. I know, I know, Muffin has never been known for being fiscally responsible but in this new age when everyone but hedge fund managers are going broke something must be done to stop the hemorrhaging!

SO, cutting to the chase here... Cutbacks (and we really hate to do this) for Muffin XXXVI will include the following:

No Flyer (or is it Flier)
No T-Shirt
No Tickets
No Mow Down
No Stage Setup
No Drive In
No Sound System
No Band Recruitment
No Videos
No Bands (organized, anyway)
No Unreal (amplified for sure)
No Portable Pinball
No Club Oiselle (or maybe without the Gold Room)
No Hay Ride (well, maybe)

Basically this boils down to having a "Muffin with No Stuff-in".

Just imagine how much more fun I, I mean YOU can have without all those distractions!

Wow! Thanks for One of the BEST Muffins Ever!!!

This was truly a Muffin for the record books! You can't possibly capture in a single post how much came together at this year's Muffin but it was pretty darned amazing. Thursday's rain and hail turned into near perfect Muffin weather for the remainder of the weekend! Some great performances were turned in at the Friday night open mic. Miz Jen, for one did a fantastic set in case you missed it. Expect big things from her at the Open Mic this summer!

The Saturday pot luck was a real wiener and a must have for future Muffins. Psuedo's fusion machine got the party up and running fast with their own mash brand of funk-hop and R&R. Very cool! They were followed by Berkeley's finest geezer punk band, The Happy Clams. Wow... what can you say! As tradition dictates, The Unreal Band capped off the night. Clearly they have been working hard because in 25 plus years of playing the Muffin, they have never sounded better! They had everyone up and dancing until well after midnight. Wow, is this world's greatest party or what!

Sunday saw Dandy G. wrap up the horseshoe tournee by defeating not one but two of his sons in the final rounds. TOC didn't do too bad either. Another terrific Itchy spin-off the Cosmic Shenanigans kicked off the third evenings show. Keep your eye on this band... they are big fun! The lone Hokum Boy himself H. Hollander dragged himself out of double H-surgery all the way to the Muffin for the next set. Nice to see you up and about H. Next up was a loose consortium out of Berkeley called the Lost Hippies (a.k.a. Cavepainters) who jammed with various Muffin family members including Doggie Jomo with a rousing rendition of the "D. J. Theme Song". The LH also performed a valuable dynamic load test of the stage by placing no fewer than 12 people on it at one time thereby qualifying it GTG for yet another year. "Laid back" Sunday was topped off with some very cool and classy blues by (all the way from Portland OR) Mr. Dan Lange. If that wasn't enough, Muffin newbie (and hopefully future regular) David Matela brought the show back to Earth with some incredible riffs that had everybody feelin' groovy. Nice!

The fun just spilled over into Monday for those who just couldn't make themselves leave. The traditional meat fest was done up right with some fine goat ribs a-la-Elin. A guitar-off ensued giving birth to at least three new verses to "Ghost Muffins in the Sky" and a rendition of D.J.'s "Muffin Song". And a very long song it is. Thirty-five years and counting!

Muffin Gate "Sauna" Seeking Buffalo Robes

... or old blankets will do if you have 'em. Here's a message from the Muffin "Gate" crowd: For all you out there with the cold of spring in your bones the fix is a good sweat. To complete the image we need all the old blankets, cotton coverlets, down comforters, moving pads and buffalo skins we can find. Help us out by bringing an old cover and dropping it off at the entrance camp on yur way in. If we can find enough rocks we'll have a warm place to drive out those chills and get ready to roll. A few logs of Oak will be gratefully accepted as well.

Editor's Note: That's right, a proper sweat lodge is NOT covered with plastic tarps alone! It needs to breath. So break out those healing crystals and get your chakras tuned up and prepare yourself to shed all that bad stuff you've been carrying around. Rumor has it that some creek access has been opened up complements of "mow down II" and it sounds like we will really be able to use it.

Lastly: IF YOU SUFFER FROM A SERIOUS ILLNESS OR HAVE AN ACUTE HEART, CIRCULATORY OR RESPIRATORY PROBLEM, CONSULT A PHYSICIAN BEFORE SWEAT BATHING (Or MUFFIN'ing in general for that matter!).

Extended Muffin Forecast: Better Than Fair To Middlin'

As of Tuesday PM things seem to be shaping up in the weather dept. It looks a little iffy for the early arrivers but by Friday any major weather should be well on its way to Boise. Saturday is lookin about as good as it gets for one of the coldest Mays on record. Zero % chance of precipitation Sat/Sun/Mon! ... you gotta like those numbers! Then again we are talkin about the foothills here where a little downburst can happen at any time. That and those expected lows are for way down the hill in balmy Mutantville so be prepared for a chilly evening or two. That said, what other excuse are you gonna come up with for not Muffin'ing this year? Once again, last minute discount tickets are available. Phone lines are open. Get your nose out of Facebook for a minute and track down a ticket! Could just be one of the best Muffins ever!

Muffin XXXV Has Landed: Only Minor Damage Reported

So... the grass is cut, firewood and port-o-pots are on order, the music is lined up, T-shirts are being screened, pins are on the way, movie screen is going up, trophies are being polished, capes dry cleaned, pits groomed and the stage is set ... for yet another huge MUFFIN!

If you haven't got your ticket yet, you still have a week left to do something about it and save yourself 5 bux and the embarrassment of having to pay the outrageous full price once you get there. There is still enough time to drop a check (payable to Meadow Muffin please) in the mail and get your very own discount ticket to Muffin XXXV.

If you can't make the entire party (it's a big weekend!) one-day (one-night) discounts will be available at 1/2 the normal price. No extra charge for those that want to make it a 5 day event.

Pins Are Back! Lil' Lucky Ju Ju is Muffin Bound!

There'll be some heavy mileage on the Lil' JuJu rolling pinball arcade after this month. It all starts with an appearance at the Pin-A-Go-Go (5/14-16) at the Dixon Fairgrounds. Then it's off to the Maker Faire (5/22-23) at the San Mateo County Events Center... Finally (assuming the wheels haven't fallen off) its scheduled to make an exclusive two day appearance at (you guessed it) the MUFFIN! Is that cool or what!?!

If you missed the Lil'JuJu three years ago, you are in for a real treat! It's essentially a mobile museum of pinball where you get to play all the machines for FREE! That is after you make your personal donation to Muffin of course (aka a "ticket"). So get busy and get your ticket before they are all gone!

Weather Prediction is FAIR for Muffin Mow Down, Saturday May 15th

Muffin "mow down" or prep day is on for this Saturday May 15 for anyone who would like to help out getting things rolling this year. Or if you are anxious to nail down a camp site or just help nail down the stage top, feel free to make the trek to Browns Valley for the event. Those that are confirmed hope to be on site by 10AM to begin operations. If you would like to attend, please bring your gas powered weed eaters, shovels, tool belts, etc. if you got em. Widespread Panic As Muffin XXXV Approaches Earth!!!

Yup, as the weeks to Muffin fade away and the event looms larger and larger, the tickets just naturally get more and more expensive. Come Saturday the Muffin will be bigger than it's been in two whole years and the price of that ever expanding humongous Muffin thing is gonna cost you 30 US bux! But seriously, we are talking about a 3 or 4 day party here... all the fun you will probably ever have for under 10 bux a day!?! Where else you gonna find that? So if your check, money order or other pro-misery note is received by May Day (5/1/10) you will be mailed your very own Muffin ticket (no questions asked).

On other fronts, the long standing tradition of "Mow Down" is being planned for TWO weeks before the big event so that participants will have two entire weeks to recover. For the uninitiated, MD is when we cut the grass, prep the stage and power, etc., etc... for the big event. More details to come but if you would like to help out this year, set aside Saturday May 15th. In the unlikely event of foul weather, MD will likely be postponed until the following Saturday.

OK, so just MAYBE there really will be a Muffin this year... Here's proof positive... Many thanks to Lee for getting this together... ummm wait a minute... Happy Band? Clam Buffet? Steamin' Dina? White Water Rafting? This thing is ALL F#%'$& UP! And what's with the dude with the badge anyway? We really don't like badges... especially at the Muffin! Last time the badges showed up they almost pulled the plug! Especially since it was TOC that greeted them at the gate. Come to think of it, maybe someone should have pulled the plug a long time ago! Guess it almost happened again 2 years back. Maybe that's the real reason why we had a "time out" last year. OK, none of THAT this year for sure. After all everyone is sayin' this is just "1 MFN 2 MNY!". We don't want to take that too literally. After all, we've got a whole new generation of Muffin Heads ready to take over. Right Kids? So back to the business at hand... Please notice the outrageous price increase for Muffin this year. That's right... show up at the door without a ticket and be prepared to hand over 35 U.S. Bux!!! Then again you could just purchase before the May 1st deadline and pay a measly 25 U.S. Bux. And if that's not enough, any order for 5 or more tickets will include an additional %20 discount!!! Oh and in case you missed the disclaimer, please note... "Meadow Muffin is a PRIVATE PARTY by invite ONLY(!!!)" and then there is the universally recognized "NO HAMMERHEADS (tm)" seal of disapproval that pretty much says it all.

Huge Turnout at First Muffin 2010 Planning Meeting

The first official planning meeting for Muffin 2010 was PACKED with enthusiastic Muffineers. Turnout was so good that Lane Splitter even threw in a free pizza and pitcher or two of beer (Thanks Tage!). Greg even came all the way down from Sacto to give the event a touch of legitimacy. So the net result is Muffin XXXV seems to be on a roll. For starters ...

1. A Flyer should be going out around March 17th (St. Patrick's Day) - thanks LEE!
2. Tickets should be printed and available by April 1st (St. Stupid's Day) - thanks CHRIS!
Price will be $25 before May 1; $30 in Advance and $XXXV at the event.
We have been promised the usual world class sound system AGAIN. Thanks GARY!

We are hoping for three nights of music again this year. That will be an open mic on Friday (events permitting), R&R on Saturday and All Acoustic Sunday (to give the neighbors a break!).

Another Geezer Punk ('n Blues) Show At Chester's Fine Eatery in Berkeley!

Winter weather got you down? Retirement fund in the crapper? Job on the skids? Can't shake that post holidaze depression? Forget all that and come on out to Chester's Bayview Cafe in Berkeley for a fine show on Friday, January 15th at 7PM!

P. Pot sez: The Happy Clams return to Chester's for another evening of acoustic geezer punk. (Paul: acoustic guitar, Gail: bass, Rawbird: banjo) This time we are pleased to share the bill with our good friend Dan Lange on one of his infrequent visits to the Bay Area from Portland, OR.

Dan dishes out an entertaining set of street blues on slide guitar. Open mic fans will certainly remember him from the first ice age of the 21st century. Meadow Muffineers, this makes a double bill for you!

We will start with a Clams appetizer at 7, followed by Dan, and then the Clams return to finish off the night after he has had is way with you. Should be approxiatemately 3 forty minute sets.

Hello out there! Fall Fest Anyone? HELL-OH!?!

Who knows, Muffin might just arise from the dead yet. Well in case there isn't much else on your September calender... here's a real good excuse to get out of the house. Thank God for The Happy Clams (and Yard Sale is certainly no sloucher either!). So enough said... see you there. We are so excited to be joining Yard Sale at their eastbay CD release of "God Bless Our Camper" at the Starry Plough on Sep. 11th.

It's going to be a great night. You won't want to miss it and we'd certainly hate to miss you. The evening kicks off with Joel Murach and the Low Rollers whose songs push far beyond your standard indie alt-country.

Next up will be the ladies of Yard Sale. Jill Olsen, Denise Funari, and Melanie DeGiovanni will dish out their thriftstore mix of folk, country, and pop and serve it up with a side of good times, which pairs nicely with a cold one or two available from your local Starry Plough bartender. And then we will rock the night away with our own brand ofgeezer punk. Why if I wasn't already going to be there, I'd be going there myself!

Clams Beat It Up at Festival Of Drums at the Stork on Sunday, July 12th

For the festival of drummers, bands will be augmenting their usual line-up with extra drummers. The affect will be less "sproul plaza" drum jam and more like like a freight train, car accident, or volcano erupting. There will be leg bouncers, nervous tappers, and hyperactive woodshop
drop-outs. if all goes according to plan, the shirtless men's movement contingent will be leading the salute to "wipeout," a drum corp. will be reenacting the ucla marching band's version of "tusk," and san francisco's bucketman will be on hand to bust it out with spoon

First Ever Solstice Bulb Fest Stirs Up Some Great Soul!

The weather could not have been finer for this first ever BYO Sol Jam on the Albany Bulb. By 3PM as the sun started to dip in the sky and the cool bay breeze picked up the Cavepainters played an even cooler set of band faves. By 4:30 or so some fine fiddle was added to the mix with a rare appearance of Strange Angel. To top that the Ravines popped in to deliver some terrific accordion fare. The Happy Clams wrapped up the show with their usual one-of-a-kind performance. As shadows grew long a soul stirring rendition of the Doggie Jomo theme song could be heard warbling on the breeze. Much fine food was in evidence with a delectable sandwich plate served up by Paul Pot, some fantastic Kim Chee prepared by Missy Dee and a host of garden veggies and fruits. Many thanks to Big Rick for conceiving and organizing a truly wonderful event. A really great time was had by all!

Paul Pot sez: We're playing a summer solstice picnic and beer thing at the Albany Bulb Ampitheater. I hear it's near the big woman statue and it's made out of old concrete, wrecked bicycles and stolen shopping carts. We're playing with the Cavepainters (I sometimes play kazoo with them at the Starry Plough on Thursdays) and Strange Angel.

It's all sorta loosely organized to take place in the 3pm to 7pm area. I don't know how the music will go or when anyone plays. I hope we just mix it up. We'll be acoustic with guitar, bass, banjo, and maybe (if Barry is there) congas. 3ish to 7ish and out in the sun, cause the sun is what it is all about.

Captain Mike Announces 2cd Annual SalmonAid Fest at Jack London Square on June 20 and 21st

Mike sez: I've been working very hard over the last year to help produce the 2nd annual SalmonAid Festival which is happening this weekend, June 20/21 at Jack London Square in Oakland. There will be lots of great music, excellent food, ice cold beer and good people. We also have a bunch of children's activities, so no worries about the little tykes - bring em along!

To kick off the Festival, on Friday evening our friends from the Karuk & Yurok Tribes will host a Ceremonial Salmon Roast at Ocean Beach in San Francisco. All the details are in the press release below. If you like salmon you really don't want to miss this event, last year's salmon roast was some of the best salmon I ever had - and if you know me, you know that I know my salmon and don't give this kind of praise away randomly.

The best band of the SalmonAid Festival will perform on Sunday, they are called "Captain Mike & the Sea Kings", (with Special Guest Bobby Young from Zachya Hooker's band) - but please feel free to also come to Oakland on Saturday when bands like Albino, The Zydeco Flames, and Mitch Woods will grace us with their presence.... yeah I know, they don't compare to the Sea Kings, but they try really hard, so come on by & show 'em some love.

Did I mention that this is a free event? No cover charge!!!!

Here's the info on the Salmon Bake:

WHAT: Members of the Karuk, Yurok, and Hoopa Tribes travel to San Francisco to host a traditional salmon bake on the eve of the 2009 Salmon Aid Festival. Tribal members will share fire roasted Klamath Spring Salmon with the public.

WHERE: Ocean Beach, San Francisco. Look for the fire pit one block south of the intersection of Fulton Street and the Great Highway.

WHEN: Friday, June 19th. Fire starts at 4:30 p.m.; fish will be ready to serve around 6:30 p.m.

WHO: Participants include fishermen, cooks, singers, and drummers from the Karuk, Yurok, and Hoopa Tribes. Tribal members are traveling from the remote Klamath River, and invite Native community members from throughout the Bay Area, as well as the general public, to come down and share fish.

Although Klamath salmon runs are dwindling, tribal fishermen still harvest salmon for ceremonial and commercial use. By joining forces with commercial fishermen, conservation groups, and others concerned about native salmon stocks, Tribal members are building support for the removal of the lower four Klamath River dams. Members of Klamath Basin Tribes will be an integral part of the 2009 Salmon Aid Festival, hosting a traditional salmon bake on the eve of the festival as well as demonstrating cultural activities throughout the Salmon Aid weekend.

demolition expert. Implosion is his other middle name. Vocalist Lady Mondegreen once sang in a doo-wop group that should have been called the Premarital Sextet, but that name was taken by some other project.

Pearmain Studios to Host DMOAS BBQ Art Fest on Sunday, April 12th

Yup, once again the infamous DMOAS BBQ extravaganza and art fest is happening at Pearmain Studios in industrial East Oakland. Starting time: around 1PM or so. The usual rules apply. Bring along your own meat (or veggie) sculpture entry if you want to compete for the big prize. Hope to see you all then... BTW peep wars are now banned at DMOAS as a result of a humongous ant invasion at the Alameda compound and the fact that contrary to popular belief, they really don't ever biodegrade.

Also in the news, if you didn't make it the Happy Clams (All Steamed Up, Baby!) CD release party, you missed a real doozy. A GREAT time was had by all and a highly successful event all around. I'm sure Mr. Pot will have some CD's on hand at the above mentioned BBQ.

Captain Mike is inviting everyone to please join him and other fish friendly folk on Thursday May 7th for a fundraiser for SalmonAid, at the LaPena Cultural Center, 3105 Shattuck Ave, Berkeley, 7:30 PM. All proceeds from this evening go to the production of the annual SalmonAid Festival that raises awareness for the problems surrounding our fishies and our water.

For example... did you know that these days 98% of all salmon released at Coleman hatchery (just outside of Sacramento) die before they ever get to the ocean? Or that if we actually allowed these salmon to live, they could create an annual economic contribution in the area of $6,000,000,000 ($6 Billion) to our State?

Muffin XXXIV Canceled Due To Incredibly Crappy Economy

Well, that's only partially true... at least the canceled due to part. Actually the Pope has an engagement on the East Coast on Muffin XXXIV weekend that apparently can't be missed. Unfortunately that means there is no one to mind the store. I know it's hard to imagine a Muffin-less year after all we have been through. I'm sure some of you will show up there anyway just like the sparrows to Capistrano. I can't tell you not to show up... just that it won't be ordained by the Pope, there won't be any amplified music and you might just suffer the wrath of Ed or an unsupervised hammerhead or two.

So we hope this doesn't come as too much of a shock... or ruin your day. It's not like you just got laid off or something.. have you? Heck the way things are going society may have completely collapsed by then anyway. We are just saving you the trouble of all the planning, provisioning, packing, driving, unpacking, setting up, partying (again and again), tearing down, packing, driving, unpacking and storing. What about that sounds like fun anyway?

Guess we will have to make up for this some how. Rumor has it a Muffineer of high standing just bought some acreage out in W. SonomaCo. It may even be in shape for a "Muffin Style" July 4th party. Stay tuned for that one.

On other fronts, the Happy Clams CD release party is looking like the Plough early next month (April 10th-ish) with a really great warm up band. San Francisco to Honor Dirk Dirksen with Dirk Dirksen Alley

The City of San Francisco has authorized the street naming of Dirk Dirksen Alley at the former Rowland Street location. For those of you who don't know, Rowland Street is the alley next to the old Mabuhay Gardens location at 443 Broadway Street in North Beach.

With your help we will be purchasing a memorial plaque and installing it at the Dirk Dirksen Alley location. Nonprofit organization, H.E.A.R. will be managing the contributions going towards the Dirk Dirksen plaque creation and the city sidewalk installation. Our goal is to raise $3000.00. Fall Fest Forecast: Sunny Days, Clear Nights with a Chance of Cavepainters

One week out, the weather forecast looks great for the Muffin Fall Fest... and the word from Rick & Co is that the Cavepainters will try to assemble in some form for the event. The deal commences on Friday but if you can't show til Saturday you won't be alone. If skies are as clear as they say, we should have some phenomenal harvest moon action as the weekend progresses. Friday night is up for grabs but the BFD (big fish dinner) is on for Saturday. Expect that Chef Lorenzo will commandeer the cook shack for your Sunday brunching pleasure. Make mine over easy on top o' the stack with a side of sausage please. There is even a rumor that Dandie Gee may make an appearance so with the Weazels in the house, a bit of shoein' might be in order. Whatever the case, do your best to bust out of town for a relaxin' weekend country style. If you can chill til Monday all the better. If you haven't posted an RSVP yet, git on it... The notorious Weasel and world champion horseshoe pro, Man Mountain Bobby Beautiful, has just returned from yet another victorious fishing expedition from the wilds of Palinland to offer you a once in a lifetime special event... A Wild Alaskan Salmon Feast!

How many other Muffin horseshoe teams can make that sort of claim... willing to travel to the arctic and back, braving high seas, gale force winds and airport security to bring you the best damn fish in the whole universe.

Berkeley Institution "Brennan's" Ousted For Condos! Farewell Gathering Friday, September 12th

A large part of the Muffin crowd mis-spent much of their youth in West Berkeley (Autogenic Systems, Clance and Rhiannon's, Virginia Street Gang). A favorite gathering place back in the late 70's and throughout the 80's was Brennan's, a bar and hofbrau style restaurant at the foot of University Avenue. After almost 50 years, Brennan's is being booted out to make room for condos. Brennan's will try to re-establish next door at the old and much smaller train depot (which can't be torn down due to its "historical" value!).

A number of the old Sam's 58 Club crowd (another sorely missed Berkeley institution) will be meeting at the old place for a final farewell on Friday September 12th. No time specified... probably around 8PM. Hope to see you all there! More info as it becomes available.

The Festival of Breasts was originally conceived as an epic music festival that would take place at The Rack Lodge, in Wyoming's Grand Teton National Park. The bill was going to be filled by bands that had breasts or know somebody who did. Eventually, the idea morphed into a Sunday BBQ at the Stork Club with real and/or fake breasts. even chicken breasts...We will celebrate all things round & soft, like a nice pair of boobs.

Feeling a bit disoriented lately? Can it really be summer already? Vague memories of another Muffin gone by? How did this happen? How did I get here? Well, the truth is that if you wait long enough, everything will pass you by! But now is your opportunity to again touch base with a handful of other brave Muffineers. Hmmm, its all coming back to me now! So it's another unofficial Muffin debrief at the Miz in Berkeley at Paul Pot's open mic on Wednesday June 11. Apparently Paul is buying drinks for anyone who performs a baseball related tune... or perhaps a baseball related joke for those not musically inclined!

So if Muffin owes you some money (or some microphone or guitar stands for that matter), show up at the Miz and chances are good that you might just be able to collect your due. You've had plenty of time to rest up so you don't have any excuses. Plus it's free! And rumor has it that if you bring your Muffin ticket stub, Greg will buy you a drink, no joke required!

Just a quick post here to let everyone know that Muffin wrapped up in good shape. Hope that all you Muffineers made it home safely. The place looked very clean and back to normal yesterday morning... thanks to you all for tidying up and hauling out garbage!

With on-site sales, we ended up selling over 80 tickets, providing enough funds to cover expenses. All the t-shirts were sold so they paid for themselves including all the musician comps! We still need to pay a few bills and deposit cash and checks, but when the dust settles we will be paying anyone that was promised cash and hasn't been paid yet.

Once again, THANKS to all the folks who participated, especially all the musicians and support people, those that traveled long distances and those who braved the less than perfect weather. More later and perhaps a "debrief" meeting to be announced. MUFFIN!!!

Looks like we will be spared the oven like conditions of a week or so ago. The down side is it will likely be a bit on the cloudy and cool side... particularly on Saturday and into Sunday. On the bright side, Friday and Monday are looking really good! Here's the official weather map for Saturday showing Muffin surrounded by light rain... who knows... maybe it will snow! So be forewarned... pack the poncho, a fleece or 2, the rain fly and don't pitch your tent in a gully! What the hey, maybe all those motor-homes will come in handy after all! Come hell or high water, DRIVE SAFE and get ready for some fun!

Muffin XXXIII: Year of the Cheap Event?

Given the lackluster ticket sales (yes tickets REALLY are still only $30 bux!) the Muffin committee is seeking really cheap events to delight and entertain the throngs of Muffineers expected to flood Muffinville this season. Rumor has it the "pirate" contingent is planning another sneak attack and beach-style weenie roast for Sunday night. Mention has also been made of a "Paella" night, perhaps Saturday... bring your biggest paella pan, swimps, chicken parts and plenty of saffron or whatever else might slow cook on a bed of spicy rice. Club Ouiselle has hinted that "The Dude" night is in the works for Sunday night... wear a bathrobe, a bowling shirt or an ugly alpaca sweater and get a free white Russian! HH is threatening to bring his copy of the Newlywed Game (home edition) and intends to force anyone who's been married in the last 5 years to answer incredibly embarassing questions on stage in front of everyone. Prizes to be announced. To make matters worse Hank Gimee is negotiating a deal to be MC. So sounds like this year is shaping up to be a memorable one.

Another Muffin Miracle: Meadow Drive-In Sign Rises after 18 Years on Junk Pile

How can this be!?! The Meadow Drive-In sign appeared briefly way back at Muffin XV. It later served a couple unseemly years as the bar surface for Club Ouiselle after which it was spurned and cast upon the junk pile where it has waited all these years for a new lease on life. Now it has risen to claim its rightful place of glory at Muffin 33.

Hell if that old sign can look this good after all that time on a trash heap what's your excuse? Bet you haven't even bought a ticket yet! You're probably thinking "I'm getting too old for all that camping, music, dancing, partying and having a really good time".

OK, be that way. All the more good time for the rest of us to suck up! And just look at that beautiful new layer of OSB on the stage (another muffin miracle... knock on wood) ready for a whole new generation of pogo'ers. This could just be the best Muffin ever and you're going to miss it because you are thinking that you're all washed up.

You know who you are. Well the truth is you still have a week or so to dust yourself off, slap on some new paint and get hold of a ticket. Dooh! Muffin Mishap! Situation AFU! The Unreal Band and Muffin Committee somehow scheduled a big Muffin Warm Up Show AND Muffin Mow Down on the same danged weekend! And Captain Mike to boot! Arrgh!!! ... You tell me, hard labor in the hot Yuba County sun all day or kickin' back at the cool Starry Plough with a pint and some fine tunes? Not much of a choice unless you are a hard core Downer... or you want to save yourself for that Magic Muffin Moment on the one and only Real Unreal Saturday night in May! OK enough said... If you aren't too keen on sweat and bullets, just march yourself down to the Starry Plough in Berkeley this May 10 for a fine (albeit warm up) show. For those hearty folks that want to get their Muffin rolling early this year, this is your chance to get a jump on things. "Mow Down" is a long time Muffin tradition of showing up a week early to whip the property into shape for the big weekend. This year we are trying something a little different by scheduling the "Down" two weeks in advance to give folks a chance to recover from all that hard work, beer lifting and can plinking. The plan is to commence activity around noon, get as much done Saturday and then chill out by the camp fire and wrap up any loose ends Sunday morning. Muffin Planning Committee Announces "Gas Tax Hog-A-Day" Saturday May 24th

Get a load of this rig! What a planet buster! Think you can top it? The Muffin committee has decided that in order to send off the Summer Consumption Season in proper form that we should all be burning as much fuel (preferably good ol' petroleum products) as humanly possible during this year's Muffin (end of the planet) celebration. That means of course getting your paws on the biggest gas guzzling 10 wheel'd hawg that you can find and drive it back and forth to the Muffin (at least once). And hell, if you have to pop out to Sacramento once or twice for brewskies then more power to you! So to mark this VERY special occasion there will be a series of prizes awarded including:

Hauled Up Most Crap (that you didn't use) Award
Largest Vehicle Volume (not hauling a trailer) Award
Most Luxurious Bathroom (driven to the Muffin) Award

It's Official! The Muffin Flyer Has Landed!

Well I guess that's that. No more doubts. Muffin XXXIII I/III is GO for take-off. Well sort of. There is this little issue of ... where to start? Selling 100 tickets might be nice. So if you know some great people out there (leave the Hammerheads at home thank you very much) you can let them in on this little 33 year old secret and invite them and their 30 bux (25 before May 1) to one of the greatest little parties on the planet! Then again, maybe you are thinking, I'm too busy to do the Muff this year. Well 33 is an awful big number in human terms... 1/2 a lifetime for many. We tried to bury the Muffin back in 2000 but it came back to life. How many lives does a Muffin have anyway? At least 32 that we know of. So just keep that in mind when you think about doing something else this Memorial Day week(end).

Oh, and here is the terrific artwork that Paul Pot put together for this year's invite. Not sure how that 1/3 got in there. Fall fest perhaps. Seems to me we lost a 1/2 a Muffin (the 1/2 baked Muffin) about 15 years back and it took one hell of an effort to get it back. So consider this extra 1/3 as a preemptive Muffin... just in case. The last thing we need now is a Mushroom Cloud! Wait... did I say that? Thank you Paul for another flyer extrordinaire and thanks to Cyn for mailing them out! Hand addressed yet! Wow... this is a whole new dimension of class! And a note to Bill and Chris... it appears you guys are seriously on-the-hook for a first class drive-in theatre this year (and BTW this doesn't have anything to do with horseshoes).

Muffin Committee Calls Emergency Meeting: Ticket Price Bumped To 50 Bux!

Due to the extremely "light" turnout of Muffineers at the so called "Muffin" Kick-Off show at the Ashkanaz on Saturday and due to lackluster response to early Muffin ticket sales the Muffin Central Committee has decided that the standard ticket price must increase to cover the anticipated budget gap. This slacker surcharge will bring the "gate" price for Muffin 33.333... tickets to an all time high of 50 USD's. Please note that the early bird ticket offer (1/2 price!) will remain in effect until tax day (April 15). Orders postmarked after midnight 4/15 will be charged the new outrageous fee unless somehow things turn around!

Speaking of the show, the Itchy Mountain Men turned in an incredible performance that was HIGHLY enjoyed by all who showed the gumption to attend. The Unreal Band sounded tighter than ever and performed some great new material. The scant handful of "faithful" that stuck around (or showed up LATE!) were treated to an awesome second set that went on and on into the early AM. Wow! Imagine how that'll sound in Muffin holler!

Also of note, expect a Muffin Flyer in the mail any day now! OK, the deal isn't real until you have the official paperwork in hand. Trust me, Monsieur Pot has promised to deliver on this one. After that, you don't have an excuse!

Hank Gimme Announces Grand Re-Opening of New and Improved Meadow Drive-In

In a press release earlier today, famous gold country millionaire and professional horseshoe impresario Hank Gimme announced the return of the Meadow Drive-In to the long standing Meadow Muffin music and arts festival. Launched back in the last century when drive-ins all over the country were closing the Meadow Drive-In bucked the trend, providing what was a long honored tradition, the concept of experiencing incredibly bad cinema from the comfort and privacy of other people's cars. A large part of this project will involve excavating the Meadow Drive-In sign from the pile of crap next to the Muffin hanger and restoring it to its former glory. On top of that, Gimme's latest media acquisition KMUF radio has promised to dedicate 100% of their bandwidth to provide in-car audio to the stunning array of cinematic gems projected each and every night at the Muffin Drive-In.

Somewhat Happy Clams Open Stork Club Fan Fest on Prez Day Eve

The (not entirely) Happy Clams kick off the Festival of the Fans 2008 BBQ at the Stork Club Sunday, Feb. 17th during Prez Day Weekend. Doors open at 3pm and then the (not entirely) HAPPY CLAMS are up first at 4pm. Not entirely happy, you say? No, it's just that the entire band can't make the gig. Paul Pot will be there on guitar and vocals. Rawbird will be matching his electric, slow-bluegrass banjo stylings to your favorite Happy Clams tunes and the further he stays away from the microphone the better it will be for everyone involved.

So have something off the grill and let the evening slip away while 9 bands follow one another until the day rolls into the next. All for a measly 7 bucks. ("Wow," he muttered just loud enough for everyone in the room to hear.) Each band is encouraged to perform at least one song, singing through the electric fan. Tips of noses and tongues may be a flying. Bring a hanky.

Fred Weed Appears with Elite Artists in Berkeley at The Freight on February 12

Wow, who knew Fred had this much class! Lara St. John, Mike Marshall, Sam Bass, Dave Grossman, Lynda Arnold, Kelly Back, and Fred Weed. If you haven't heard any of these folks, you are in for a treat! Check it out!

Canadian-born violinist Lara St. John is a passionate, charismatic soloist who has performed with the orchestras of Cleveland, Philadelphia, Minnesota, Seattle, Montreal, and many more, as well as throughout Europe and Asia. Her previous three CDs, two of them dedicated to works by Bach, gained her great critical acclaim for her superb technique, musical imagination, and vitality. She has been featured in numerous publications, from People to US News and World Report, as well as on CNN's Showbiz Today and NPR's All Things Considered.

Joining Lara are an eclectic group of musicians from the worlds of jazz, pop, blues, rock, and classical, apparently united only in their devotion to the music of Bach. Featured are cellist Sam Bass, Dave Grossman on electric bass, Lynda Arnold on flute, electric guitarist Kelly Back, and Fred Weed on piano.

Note to Muffineers: Please refrain from yelling "MUF-FIN!!!" during Mr. Weed's performance.

The Itchy Mountain Men Go Goth at St. Hilary's in Tiburon, Friday November 9, 2007

The Itchy Mountain Men will be performing at Old St. Hilary’s just up the hill from down town Tiburon. One of the few Carpenter Gothic churches to survive in its original setting, St. Hilary’s was built in 1888 to serve railroad families. A cool old hall to hear some great mountain music!

The pre-show will include Molly Tuttle, who is 16, and has just started attending Palo Alto High, has a haunting sound. Molly will be performing with her two younger brothers, Michael and Sullivan.

Unreal Band CD Release and Pat Quinn Tribute at the Ashkenaz Saturday, October 20

Almost thirty years ago, a guy heard a band practicing in a room they had rented in the back of his club. Blown away by what he was hearing, he declared that the band was far too good to not be playing gigs and he booked them to play an upcoming night. Well.....the guy was Dave Nadel.....the club was The Ashkenaz.....and the band....well they didn't have a name yet, but there was this one word that seemed to keep coming up...........

Three decades later, The Unreal Band is (finally) releasing their first CD "Asphalt Dream." And the release party is taking place where it all began.....at The Ashkenaz Club this coming Saturday Night, October 20th at 9pm. The Ashkenaz is located at 1317 San Pablo Anvenue in Berkeley. The night falls one year to the day of Pat ("Irish") Quinn's exit on the sunset and a musical tribute in his honor is on the agenda with some special guest performers.

And if THAT is not enough, GRAPEFRUIT ED is going to kick things off. Chuck Rosene, Steve Ellis and Sam Johnston will be puttin' in some overtime. They'll join Pat Nevins and Stu Allen for some "citrus flavored tunes for the soul" before getting Unreal with Gary Robinson, Ron Kresch, Clayton Call and Fred Weed.

Muffin "Fall Fest" Was A Blast - Thanks To Everyone!

Muffin’s first “Fall Fest” started with an incredible thunder and lightning show complete with downpour on Friday night. Fortunately we had a good hot fire going before it started and the rain only lasted a hour or so. While the fire warmed our outards, a few rounds of Lou’s Wild Turkey warmed our innards. Paul, Doug and Coolius put together an impromptu performance that had everyone in stitches. Some say the round of fireworks finished off the storm because by midnight the sky was perfectly clear and the moon lit up the whole place.

Saturday was a beaut! Crisp fall weather returned and the Cavepainters and a few other stragglers rolled in. Chris, Michelle, Bill and Larry warmed up the shoe pits in the early afternoon. Elin’s rain delayed Louisiana bug boil went on to major fanfare in the late afternoon along with an incredible salad, rice and beans, cowboy enchiladas and some aioli sauce that was to die for. Even Ed made an appearance to sample the fine fare. The fire was stoked up and loaded with a fresh pile of oak while Rick, Ed, Steve, Laurie and Matt cranked up all the Cavepaint faves as darkness flooded in. Doug pitched in with some of his more colorful Jomo classics while Greg, Gary and the Fire Marshall battled over a major conflagration that had everyone seeing colors. Paul dug out some classics and Clam favorites from his tune bag to round out the evening. Matt capped things off with a heart wrenching return to the 70's. Quite a "pick" fest it was.

Dina and Jen got things rolling on Sunday with a fabulous brunch of eggs, sausage, pototoes and banana breads. Most had packed up by noon and were headed out. A jar was passed around for “Duane’s recovery fund” that netted around $600. I’m sure Duane’s family will be grateful for the assistance. Some folks went by to visit Duane in Marysville on the way in or the way out. He seems to be improving and hopefully will be able to go home soon. It’s been a long haul but looks hopeful at this point.

Thanks to everyone who made the trip up (and those that tried). A great time was had by all! If anyone has pictures, send ‘em in and I’ll post ‘em.

Greg sez the port-o-pots are on their way, Elin sez the fish pot is ready to go, the Tiki Shak has been waitin’ for us since May and Ed sez the “pits” have never looked finer! With a little bit of mountain fog and maybe one of those wave sound machines, we will be ready to BISKIT!!! (sand not included). For the uninitiated, this is like Muffin-EASY so don’t sweat it too much. Bring a warm bag or an extra blanket or two cause it may be chilly up in them thar hills! Friday night is “fish boil”, Saturday night is cowboy cookin’ (beach style) and Sunday is Miss Dina’s breakfast of champions pot luck.

If you got it in your heart, don’t forget to bring a little “change for Duane”. He is still mending in a facility in Marysville and we may pay him a visit or two on Saturday. Ya best bring long a lil cayun sauz wid ya Friday cuz we gonna be boilin de crab an de swimps up reel goud. Dis is gonna be a fine souper, I garontee!

What ever happened to the "anti-Muffin", better known as the "Sea Biskit"!?! I guess that we all got too lazy to make the trek to RCA/Shoe beach for the end-o-summer event. Darryl would make up his wicked roux and we would all bring seafood to toss in the pot (fish heads and Clance's can of mackerel not withstanding). A huge bonfire would light up the beach and we would dance and drink to summer's passing all night long til the rangers came out to kick us out (you can't call it "camping" if you don't go to sleep!).

So maybe we can revive a little bit o that spirit at this at this event (see Fall Fest post) with a cajun crab, crawdaddy and whatever chow down. Wow, nothing like a little toxic shock to kick the neurons into gear! Sounds like Elin and Hans-Jurgen have volunteered to get the ball rolling. It'll probably be a "late" dinner to give everyone a change to arrive so get there when you can. Oh and Miss Dina has proposed a Sunday morning "pot luck" brunch. Sounds like another case of bubbly might be in order. And if anyone is still hungry on Saturday night, we can throw some grills down and do some cowboy cookin. Rumor has it Club Dub (Oui Oui) will be open for bizniz and that that most of those Cavepainters will likely show to play a favorite or two. Yow, how cool is dat!

And in case you've been brain dead for the last 2 years, the Cavepainters are still playing Thurday happy hour at the Starry Plough in Berkeley (6-8PM) every week. Good times and great tunes for FREE! (or the price of a pitcher or two).

Muffin's First "Fall Fest" Set For September 28 and 29th

Muffin in September? Mooo... Hate to see summer fading away? Dreading those shorter and shorter days? This is one last chance to “git out in them thar hills” while the sun still shines and the weather is fine!

The Meadow Muffin Commit-tay is announcing a first ever “informal” weekend camp-out in Browns Valley, Friday and Saturday September 28 and 29 (pack up Sunday), open to Muffineer’s and their closest friends. The plan is to set up a limited camp in “Muffin Holler” and just kick back and enjoy the outdoors for a couple of days. We will have a port-a-pot or two on hand, the firewood pile stocked and maybe plan a communal meal or two (Saturday night?). Other than that, it will be a "Muff in the buff"!

Unreal Band to Play John Havard Benefit on Sunday, August 26 - 5:30PM

The Unreal Band have a number of gigs coming up in Berkeley over the next few months starting with a benefit appearance for John Havard at the Starry Plough on Sunday August 26. Word is that the band is scheduled to go on at 5:30PM. John has been diagnosed with lung cancer and like any true artist has very few visible means of support. You probably know John from his stint with the Natives and a long list of other East Bay bands over the last 30 years. Will pass more info along when it becomes clear when the Unreal will play (it's from 1 to 7PM). It will definately be a huge event with no doubt many, many great musicians. On other fronts… Greg reports is that Duane has been moved from Reno to a long term care facility near Woodland. Apparently his condition has not significantly improved. Duane Update: Condition Improving, Many Hurdles Ahead

Greg paid a visit to our injured wagonmaster, Duane Stueve, in Carson City, NV on Wednesday (7/11) and reports back that he appears to be making progress. As Greg sez, "He is one banged up old cowboy". The hospital is hoping that he can improve enough in the next few weeks to be moved closer to his home near Linda, CA. Greg made a $300 donation to Duane's family from the funds remaining in the Muffin account. Duane's wife and daughter have been at his side since the accident early last month and the donation was a welcome show of support.

An article "Horseman Gets Hand", appeared in the June 25 Marysville Appeal Democrat (http://www.appeal-democrat.com/news/stueve_50260___article.html/family_horses.html) providing more details on the accident and Duane's condition. A fund raiser was held on July 7th by the Linda Fire Department.

Details are a bit sketchy, but Duane was involved in an accident at a draft horse competition in Winnemucca in early June. Apparently there was a mishap involving a mixed team of his and an acquaintances horses resulting in a bad fall and a head injury. His prolonged stay in a Reno hospital has resulted in various complications and the word is that he is not doing well. It is hoped that he can be transferred soon to a Marysville facility where he can be close to his family and friends. Muffin would like to get word to him that we are thinking about him and wish him a speedy recovery. Any comments to this post will be passed along to Duane. The past 20+ years playing in bands, touring and recording music has earned me a Masters Degree in duct tape and its never-ending fix-all properties. My Dad fixed everything with a little tape, this should have given me a clue to my eventual addiction to adhesive backed products!
I have friends that used to keep razor blades in their wallets just to lift cool stickers they would come across. Instead of an old shoebox full of baseball cards, I have the back of a van full of stickers. I feel that stickers never really reach their true potential in life until stuck someplace or on something. There is nothing more satisfying than a properly placed sticker! Whether it's on your car, skateboard, bicycle, guitar, motorcycle or refrigerator. It is amazing how much money is spent on endorsements and advertising with the end result being the proper placement of a sticker. Today's NASCAR is cut up similar to the way a side of beef is laid out by the butcher. The tastier cuts costs more money.
The area of pop culture is a slippery slope. The idea of sharing a portion of today's sticker culture is one that I have been excited about for a long time. With the ever popular online community and photo sharing websites it's amazing how many others are documenting and sharing what you are thinking about doing right this moment! I have chosen to share a few locations that are actually indoors as opposed to the popular street locations that many people see everyday. Maybe you recognize these places and actually slapped one of the pieces up personally?
The next time you go out to see some live music or are waiting for a taxi at the airport, check the back of a sign or pole for a few of the vinyl and paper messages left behind. Don't be so quick to dismiss these little artistic artifacts left by some nomadic art lover.

Notes from the Curator
This is Joe’s 2nd time here at the Trans-View and his first solo. Joe has been haunting the Ju Ju since its inception and thru Oakland’s Pinball Mafia has been providing us with protection services from day one. But it is not thru any “favorism” that Joe is gilding the panels of the Trans View. Joe has taken more pictures and has an appreciation for graphics and the printed image that far surpasses anyone I’ve ever met. He can study the silk-screened lines of a playfield and soak up the minute detail waxing eloquently on their aesthetic qualities. His keen eye captures a story and gets it into the camera like no other. I never had a taste for stickers until I met Joe. And now, we’ve got a whole room full to share with everyone! Thanks Joe!

For those of you that missed it somehow, Cavepainter Ed Wray took a fall on Saturday night, injuring his wrist before having a chance to play Sunday (I think the appearance of the Quinnettes may have brought on a bit too much exuberance). Word in is that he has had surgery. In any case, I'm sure ALL of Muffin is pullin' for you Ed! All I can say is it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. Clams Unhappy about Opening for Sea Kings, Skidaddle Back to Sunday

Well, after a whole lot-o-churn, it looks like things are back to where they started. Funny how that happens more often than not. Apparently the Clams were not too comfortable taking the stage before a bunch of Sea Kings anyway! Something about an off-color chowder recipe remark. Can’t say I blame ‘em and everyone knows that Sunday night is the new Saturday anyway. Just don’t tell that to those Roamin’ Unreal. Now that the current crisis has been averted maybe we can get back to the business of what Muffin is all about. Perhaps Gimme had it right when he said that “in a million years no one will remember what band played but they sure as hell will remember who won that beautiful new horseshoe trophy”. In any case, sleep well Muffineers with the thought that all is peace and harmony once again in Muffinville. That is until Friday comes when all hell breaks loose once again.

Hank Gimme Suggests Firing ALL Musicians and Hiring Pro Horseshoe Teams Instead

Apparently the odor of a fancy new trophy is in the air because the Weasel’s manager, Playboy Millionaire Hank Gimme, has proposed that Muffin "quit bowing down to all these musicians and artistic types and start taking the sport of professional horseshoes seriously". Rumor has it that somehow Gimme has tapped into a whole pile of cash (in XXX-cess of $1K) and placed an order with Zinz Custom Machining for an incredible new horseshoe prize. "Forget those puny belts or those sissy gold chains, this trophy will shock and awe all your friends and associates. Walk away with this baby and you will be the envy of your block and whole lot more!" With the recent outbreak of Musical Me-itis, Gimme thinks "it’s high time to dump the whole music lineup and focus on some real culture for a change". Apparently Muffin management has been rather cool on the idea but at the same time hasn’t trashed it either. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see if its tunes as usual or Pro Horseshoes all party long!
